Malawi Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BBSS), 2013-2014

BBSS 2013 - 2014 poster

We are pleased to present the report of the Malawi Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BBSS), 2013-2014. This report is a product of a collaborative effort by our main client the National AIDS Commission (NAC), the National Statistics Office (NSO - implementers), with technical input and support from all national and international organizations/institutions representing the BBSS Technical Working Group in Malawi. We are grateful for all who contributed to this extensive effort.

Malawi BBSS 2013-2014 was implemented as a follow up to the 2004 BSS to monitor trends in the key indicators pertaining to HIV and AIDS. The study design was similar to the one carried out in 2006, which was a combination of a series of quantitative studies and focus-group discussions. The 2013-2014 BBSS included a biological test component (HIV and syphilis testing) to determine the level of HIV and syphilis prevalence among population groups at high risk. It also included population size estimation of Female Sex Workers.

We hope this publication will reach a wider audience and serve to inform policy and program decision making at the national, regional, and community levels in responding to HIV and AIDS particularly among groups at high risk in Malawi. We also hope that the information contained in this publication will be used to intensify efforts to prevent the spread of HIV and provide support to those affected by the epidemic.
